The Cork Backpackers Hillwalking Club is one of the most active and foremost hiking and hillwalking clubs in Cork. The club’s chief aim is to encourage and promote hiking, hill walking and mountain climbing in a fun environment. We have four different grades of hill walks to suit all levels of fitness and abilities. Although Cork city is our base members come from all over the county and beyond. We go hiking every second Sunday and you can view our walk programme on the “Calendar of Events” button below.
Why join our hillwalking club?
Whether you are new to or have experience in mountaineering or hillwalking this is the club for you. We have four grades of hill walks [Walk Grades – a Guide] designed to suit all levels of abilities and fitness. The emphasis at all times is on participation and enjoyment of all club activities.
On bank holidays the club arranges weekends away so members can go climbing mountain ranges throughout Ireland. Every year the club organises the Club Challenge Walk for members. In recent years this has taken the form of the Four Peaks Challenge Walks where members get an opportunity to climb the highest mountain in each of the four provinces. The Four Peaks Challenge Certificate is awarded to all members who succeed in climbing the highest mountain in each of the four provinces. In 2019 the Club Challenge Walk is the MacGillicuddy Reeks Challenge Walk taking place on Sunday, May 19th.
Although the main focus of the Club is hillwalking and mountaineering, members also participate in other activities such as cycling, orienteering, rock climbing, kayaking, camping and trips overseas. In conclusion the club has an active social calendar with regular nights out, parties, treasure hunts, barbecue, film nights, weekends away etc.
The club is affiliated to and insured through: Mountaineering Ireland
