In memory of our good friend John who passed away on 19th Feb 2018. The video below has a few memories of some of the great times and walks we had with John over the years.
John was a gentleman with a kind word to say about everyone. After taking early retirement a few years ago he joined the Backpackers. He rarely missed a walk or social event be it to the circus, ten pin bowling, cinema or whatever, and he was always the first to sign up. On Sundays he loved his days out on the hills meeting everyone . He loved his GPS and had a keen interest in navigation, often leading us on great walks around the North side. A quiet man with a great sense of humour. You would often hear his hearty laugh on the hills as he shared a joke with us. John was friends with everybody and in return everyone loved him. He was always willing to help out anyone with jobs that needed to be done. Any job he took on he would do to perfection.
John’s Last Walk
John’s last walk with the club was in the snow on the Knockmealdowns on Sunday 11th February 2018. This was just over a week before he passed and he absolutely loved it. The picture above is from that walk.
He had a little dog that he walked the legs off and the dog was delighted to get a rest on the Sundays that John went out on the hills. He loved his music and was a great fan of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan to name but a few. So next time you hear Mr Tambourine Man, think of our good friend John.
The final picture in the video is a plaque erected by John’s family near the spot where he passed away on Mangerton Mountain.
John we all miss you. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace.
Anthony, All the Committee and John’s friends in the Club.
