Backpackers start New Year with Paps walk
The Cork Backpackers Hillwalking Club braved snow and rain to climb The Paps for their first regular walk of the New Year. A large group of Backpackers took part with Joe Murphy leading the ultra fit moderate climbers firstly to the Eastern Pap where snow between one foot and up to two feet was encountered. From there the group descended to the saddle and climbed the Western Pap.
Dan White (with a lot of help from Charlie Corrigan) led the combined short and easy walk from the beginning of the green road for about a kilometre and then turning west up the step slope of the Eastern Pap. At the summit we had a hurried lunch as the biting cold wind swept across the mountain top. There is no truth in the rumour that four Backpackers were injured during a ferocious snow fight on the summit. All Backpackers returned safely to the starting point! During our lunch we were joined by a group from the Blackrock Hillwalking Club. After pleasantries were exchanged we headed firstly North and then East and descended to the green road close to Lough Nabaroda and back to the cars. Later warm comforting food was enjoyed at The Abbey Hotel in Ballyvourney.
Our next regular Sunday walk is on January 10th, 2016 to The North Galtees.
You can sign up for this walk with the walk organiser Pat Sheehan at our Wednesday social night in Electric Bar on the South Mall or alternatively you can sign up online on our homepage: www.corkpackpackers.ie
