2016 Holly Walk Report:
Every year since it’s foundation in 1982 the club has it’s annual holly walk in the lead up to Christmas. On Sunday 18th December, Cork Backpackers Hillwalkers Club (CBHC) held their annual festive hollywalk. Fifty five members gathered at Kate Kearney’s for coffee and scones. Three competent and knowledgeable leaders led their respective category of walking grade back safely to Kate’s.
The moderate category led by Greg O’Hare summited Tomies mountain (735m). The short category led by Niamh Sherlock and co-led by Jerry Murphy summited Tomies also. Both groups returned by the Gap of Dunloe. The Easy category walked to the head of the Gap of Dunloe and continued on slightly further to overlook the Black Valley. Weather conditions were perfect for walking: Dry and very mild.
An after party fancy dress fun themed outfit got members into the festive mood in Kates. The ambience at the “Barn Suite” was set by a sea of lights : using candles and battery-operated nightlights in glass containers from vases to jam jars to tea light holders. Copious amounts of mulled wine, mince pies, cream and a delicious three course dinner was served very efficiently.
All members opened up, got out of their seats and mingled while being entertained by the talented live band “Bugsy and Aine”. Popular songs, laughs and fun stories resonated the walls of the “Barn Suite” while others hit the dance floor.
Management at Kate’s awarded three prizes on the night. First prize went to “Sumo Santa” –Liz O’Callaghan; second prize went to “Santa’s Little Helper” – Valerie Mc Carthy and third prize went to “Flashing Santa” – Greg O’Hare.
A raffle was held with spots galore. A fun filled day and night was had by all. It is sure to be the most talked about for months to come.
