The club meets every fortnight for its Sign Up & Social Night. Newcomers are welcome to join us on the Wednesdays before a walk from 9.00pm in Counihan’s Pub, Pembroke Street, Cork. Walkers can sign up for the next hill walk or book and pay for any one of the many events the club organises each year: club hill walks, walking weekends away, challenge walks, social events such as our Christmas party, summer barbeque, Cork City historical walk etc.
As the numbers continued to increase on walks, the Club moved from one walk for everyone, to graded walks and to taking names beforehand. Also friendships quickly developed and the desire to meet socially between walks grew. From this, people started meeting on the Wednesday before walks.
As the numbers in the club grew rapidly from its foundation the club moved from “The Abbey Tavern”, to “The Ovens”, to “The Office”, to “The Grand Circle”, to “The Vinyard”, to “Counihans Pub”, Electric bar, The Ovens Bar, and currently Counihan’s Pub, Pembroke Street, Cork.
For new walkers as well as the chance to sign up it is an ideal time to get information on the club’s walks and advice on what clothing and gear to bring on a hill walk. Members have a choice of four grades of walk and can sign up for the walk of their choice in the pub.
Within driving distance of Cork we are fortunate to have a great variety of mountain ranges suitable for spectacular day hiking. These include the following: The Galtees, The Comeraghs, The Knockmealdowns, The Cahas and the McGillicuddy Reeks in Kerry.
On bank holiday weekends the club organises weekends away to enable members to climb mountain ranges throughout Ireland. Also members can book and pay for any of the many events the club organises including; weekends away, challenge walks, barbeques, treasure hunt, parties etc.
